PART 2
The Prophetic Times in the Prophecy of Daniel
The intent of this study is to focus primarily on the prophetic times spoken of in Daniel. Keep that in mind as it will cause many questions that will be answered in the next study.
By Rodney Phillips
There are 10 direct references to prophetic time, 7 are in Daniel and 3 are in revelation. The key to understanding prophecy is context. Taking in order of the text given lets look at the context of each text. The context can typically be found surrounding the text in question.

#1 Daniel 7:25 He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time.
Chapter 7 starts with a dream, it reveals four beast that are coming up out of the sea.
These four beast represent four kingdoms. The beast representing the fourth kingdom has ten horns, they are called kingdoms but they are not like the first four, they don’t have the ability to control the world. They are are followed by another horn that will that will take control of the world.
Daniel 7:24 As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them, and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings.
The first parts of verse 25 says he is arrogant enough that it will even attack God and his people.
#2 Daniel 8;14 “and he said to me for two thousand three hundred days then the sanctuary shall be cleansed”.
Daniel 8 also starts with a dream, this time its about a “Ram” and a “He Goat”. The ram represents Persia and the goat represents Greece. Both have significant horns that are broken, the goat has four horns and from one of these, the little horn makes his entrance. Verse 25 says he will cause deceit to prosper, he will become more arrogant, he will attack more than just God and his people.
The angel tells Daniel that in two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings it will be over.
#3 Daniel 9;24 identifies a time period of seventy sevens. This period of time is actually divided into three specific events. We will come back to this, there will be a lot to talk about.
#4 Daniel 10;14 “Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days in the future “.
Then the angel tells Daniel he must leave, he has been fighting with the king of Persia and to beware because the king of Greece is coming, an indication of something worse than Persia.
These two kings are under the influence of evil.
#5 Daniel 11;27 last part “But it shall not prosper for the end will still be at the appointed time,
This text is about negotiations taking place between the little horn and Greece and Persia or the ram and the goat.
#6 Daniel 12;6,7 How long shall the fulfillment of these things be, then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be for a time times and a half of time, and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.
“How long will the fulfillment of these things be” is referring to how long the little horn will be allowed to go on.
#7 Daniel 12;11 “and from the time that the daily is taken away and the abomination of desolation is set up there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days”.
Here the angel is speaking and is very specific about when this time period begins.
#8 Revelation 11;1-3 I was given a reed like a measuring rod, and the angel said rise measure the temple of God, the alter, and the people that worship there but leave out the court which is outside the temple, do not measure it for it has been given to the Gentiles. (The reference to leaving out the court because it has been given to the Gentile is a reference to false or counterfeit religion.) And they will tread the holy city underfoot for 42 months. And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophecy one thousand two hundred sixty days in sackcloth. (In sackcloth, means under extreme duress.)
The time period 42 month and one thousand two hundred sixty days is the same time, the events spoken, “treading the holy city” and “power to my two witnesses” are happening simultaneously because of the little horn.
This text is also referring back to Daniel chapter 9, we will get back to that shortly.
#9 Revelation 12;14 but the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to a place where she is nourished for a time times and a half of time, from the presence of the serpent. This is a figurative text or description, John sees the woman, in revelation, a woman represents an organized system of beliefs or a church. Sometimes its a true church sometimes a false church, in this case its a true church. This woman or church has an army, an army that is being prepared. This army is 144,000 strong, they will be called up, it appears, after the events spoken of in Daniel.
During this time it will be every man for himself, he will not have a church, a pastor, or organization of any kind to lean on, his strength will only come from his own faith and knowledge of God and the Holy Spirit.
This would be a good time to review the story of the ten virgins.
#10 Revelation 13;5 and he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty two months.
The verses surrounding this text reveal that the little horn is not acting alone.
The period of time mentioned in these 10 text are all referring to the exact same time just before the end of time. While there is a difference in the way they are stated, 2300, time times and half of time, 1260 days, 70 sevens, 1290 days 42 months they are all referring to the time the little horn takes power at the end of time.
Let’s clear up a few things.
There are many that believe, that in prophecy the number in days actually represent an equal number in years, and a very compelling argument can be made to prove this theory. This comes primarily from four texts in Daniel.
The text are:
Daniel 9:24 "Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place.
Daniel 9:25 So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in troublesome times.
Daniel 9:26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.
Daniel 9:27 And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate."
In the book of Nehemiah, the king, Artaxerxes gave Nehemiah permission to rebuild Jerusalem. Some of his constituents were not happy about that and caused a lot of problems even threatening those involved with the rebuilding project. After several years of delays the king actually gave a decree that Jerusalem would be rebuilt. That was in 457 bc, when you add that to the 69 weeks it equals 483 days or years, it will put it at the exact time when Jesus was baptized and anointed as prophesied in verse 23.
Then in the middle of the week he shall end sacrifice and offering pointing to Christ crucifixion. If you convert days into years the numbers add up perfectly.
Here’s the problem. To use the text “The street shall be rebuilt again, and the wall, even in troublesome times” to point to Nehemiah’s command to rebuild Jerusalem is out of context. The king loved Nehemiah, he greatly respected the Jews because of their commitment to sacrifice, he even gave Nehemiah the royal checkbook. The issues that Nehemiah faced would be better described as “problematic” at best compared to the context of the words “troublesome times”.
Then there is the belief that it points to the exact time when Jesus was baptized and anointed by the Holy Spirit, But then you have to except that the Most Holy or God that is anointed in verse 24 is not actually God Himself but Jesus. The real problem is it’s not talking about God or Jesus, it’s talking about a Holy thing.
Verse 27 says he will bring an end to sacrifice and offering in the middle of the week pointing to the crucifixion. Sacrifice and offering didn’t stop for 37 years after the crucifixion and that was only because the Roman’s massacred the Jews.
The most convincing argument of a day equals a year is In verse 25, it says “to restore and rebuild Jerusalem “until” Messiah the Prince. The problem is the word “until” is not the word used in the original language of the Bible and again it puts the whole text out of context.
The original language uses the word “unto”, the context here is that Jerusalem is being rebuilt not in the context of time but as a reformation or return to the “Messiah the Prince”.
Daniel 8;14 makes it clear, it says “unto two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings. In the original Hebrew language the word “Boqer” which means dawn is used, and “Ereb” or dusk is used specifically referring to a 24 hour period of time. In genesis chapter 1, the words evenings and mornings are mentioned 12 times but is only referring to 6 days. The 2300 evenings and mornings translation is more likely to be 1150 days.
In Daniel 8 verse 26 the angel tells Daniel that the vision of the evenings and mornings refers to many “days” in the future, the word “days” used here in the Hebrew is yowm which is most often used to describe an expanse of time beyond a 24 hour day. The word “yowm” is not used in any instance for this prophetic period of time.
The significance of the times given are not so much about a specific number of days but that the events that are taking place during this time will be short.
The time prophecy in Daniel chapter 9 is 490 days long. The other time period in Daniel is 1260 days long and that may be the reason for the confusion, creating the “year for a day” theory.
Daniel chapter nine as it is intended!
Daniel 9;24 “seventy sevens are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy thing”.
The angel said, “seventy sevens” are determined. Most Bible translations say seventy weeks, but the original language here, is specific, it is sevens. The way that is phrased doesn’t fit with the other 9 references to prophetic time. Why didn’t the angel just say 490 days or 70 weeks, like it has been translated?
The angel used the phrase “seventy sevens are determined” because it is more than just about a period of time.
The other nine references are about a period of time that surround the little horn when it comes to power, and so are the “seventy sevens”. It is not a different prophecy. The context of chapter nine would put the 490 days in the last part of the 1260 days during the time of the little horn.
Daniel chapter 9 is the very hart of the prophecy of Daniel.
It is the response of Gods people to the actions of little horn.
The chapter starts with Daniel's prayer for forgiveness. Israel was established by God to be a witness to the world, to point mankind to the Most High God. They didn’t do that, they turned from God and started worshiping other gods so God turned His back on them as a nation and they were captured by the king of Babylon. As Daniel was in prayer Gabriel the angel appears, he tells Daniel that at the beginning of his prayer he was ordered to go talk to him. This is not coincidental, he proceeds to tell Daniel that during the 1260 days of prophetic time he had been dreaming of “his people” (or people like Daniel) will be given a chance to do what he was asking forgiveness for. They will preach the gospel, the real gospel. It will be about the owner and creator of all things, His Son Jesus and how He came to this earth to save us.
This will take place during what is described as “troublesome times”, last part of verse 25.
These troublesome times can be broken up into three causes or events based on the prophecies of the Bible.
#1 If presented in order the first would be greed.
Mathew 19;23 Jesus said to His disciples, assuredly I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Mathew 6;19 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
Luke 12;15 Take heed and beware of covetousness, for ones life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.
2Timothy 3;1,2 But know this in the last days perilous times will will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.
James 5;1-6 Come now you rich, weep and howl, for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud cry out. And the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord. You have lived on earth in pleasure and luxury, you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned, you have murdered the just, he does not resist you.
#2 will be humanism, not just the absence or denial of God but out right hatred for God and his people.
Proverbs 14;12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
Jude verse 18, there will be mockers in the last days who will walk according to their own ungodly lust.
1timothy 4;1in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron.
Isaiah 5;20 woe to those who call evil good and good evil. ; who put darkness for light and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight.
These two, greed and humanism, while they have been around sense the beginning of time were perfected by two of the elements identified in Daniel’s dream about the ram and goat.
#3 Natural causes. Today the phrase climate change is used to assess blame for most instances of trouble. Those that use that term so freely have no clue as to what is coming.
Mathew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21, all start the same way, wars and rumors of wars, nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. But then Jesus said, And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines an pestilences.
Romans 8;22, for we know that the whole earth groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. “Birth pangs”, meaning they will be happening more frequently and with more intensity. These things will eerily appear to have a mind of there own, they will be happening in unexpected times and places.
Return to true Christianity!
This will be a time of absolute uncertainty, it will appear that the earth is imploding. People world wide will realize that life as they know it has come to an end. Daniel 12:4 says during this time many will will be looking for understanding and will find it, there will be a demand, a world wide demand to return to true Christianity, this will not be just a religious movement, this will be a call to return to true biblical beliefs where Jesus Christ is the foundation, the Forth commandment, the Sabbath or the most holy thing, will be re-established. This is what the angel meant when he told Daniel in verse 25; from the going forth of the command to rebuild Jerusalem and the street and the moat unto Messiah the Prince.
Seventy sevens.
Seventy sevens will be given to your people. The term “seventy sevens” is not only a declaration of time but will be an intensely supernatural, and divinely inspired time.
All through the Bible the word seven is associated with God. The Bible starts with God establishing the 7 day week and the seventh day sabbath. Israel marched around Jericho seven for days then on the seventh day marched seven times and the walls fell. A man with leprosy was told to go bathe in a filthy river seven times and when he did he was healed. Since we are talking about end time events, the book of Revelation is full of sevens. Seven lamps, seven spirits of God, seven angels with seven plagues, seven seals, seven woes, all a reflection of the power of God.
James chapter 5 verse 7 describes this time as both the early and the later rain coming at the same time.
Joel chapter 2 verse 23 says the same thing, this is a reference to spring rains that cause a garden to sprout and grow and the latter rains cause the plants to mature and produce their harvest. This burst of rain both early and latter at the same time is also referred to as the “teacher of righteousness”.
Joel 2:28 says And it shall come to pass that I will pour My Spirit out on all flesh, your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 29 and also on My menservants and My maidservants.
There will be many unexplained events taking place at this time, the spirit of God will be so strong it will be crushing to some but others will embrace it.
The seventy sevens are divided by three specific events, in verse 26 the angel said there will be seven weeks, this is the period of time when the spirit of God is poured out on His people.
The second period or sixty two sevens revolve around the Little horn, he has claimed to have the solution to the problems the world is facing and the world has swept him into power as the world leader. He has an agenda (more on that in the next study) his primary objective is to do away with freedom of religion and establish himself as the worlds only religious leader. Verse 26 says after 62 weeks Messiah shall be ”cut off”.
This is how 2 Thessaloians 2:3-11 puts it.
3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. (Or cut off).
Daniel 8;12 Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered.
The word “daily” is sometimes translated as “regular” or something that happens regularly, it is a reference to the 7th day Sabbath, the word “sacrifices” does not appear in the original language.
Daniel 9;24 says his power shall be mighty but it wont be his power, his power will come from the dragon or satan. He will appear to perform incredible miracles that will cause people to believe.
The book of Joel chapter 3 verse 14 says, Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord is in the valley of decision.
It will be the third period of the sevens, the last seven, that the little horn will become angry that the people of God are still standing firm. He will make laws making it illegal to worship the true God. He will rally his followers, and they will destroy anything that resembles what is true, but that will not stop Gods people. It will be in the middle of the last period of seven or three and a half days that he will make a death decree that all the followers of God must die.
Revelation 11;7, when they have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war with them and overcome them and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where our lord was crucified. Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodied three and a half days and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.
The book of Daniel talks about a sanctuary, God established the sanctuary to be the roadmap to salvation. Every part of the sanctuary reveals a step in the pathway leading to a relationship with God. The little horn is going to establish a counterfeit sanctuary. This false sanctuary puts him in the place of God.
Daniel 8;13,14 Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who was speaking, “How long will the vision be, concerning the daily and the transgression of desolation, the giving of both the sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?”14 And he said to me, “For two thousand three hundred days; then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.”
The prophecies of Daniel reveal to Gods people a time of great spiritual trouble where their faith will be challenged, their lives will be threatened and ultimately lost. Humanism will take over and mandate a new religion, one that excludes God. This prophetic period of time will only be for a short time and then it says “the sanctuary will be cleansed”. Daniel 9;24 the last part says to anoint the Most Holy. At the end of this prophetic time God will be acknowledged or anointed and the sanctuary will have been cleansed of this false religion.
If you have managed to survive to this point then you have made it to the 1335 spoken of in chapter 12 verse 12 “How blessed is he who keeps waiting and attains to the 1,335 days!”
The book of Daniel speaks of two separate times of trouble, this is the first, the last one is worse.
